“Businesses are generally either easy to sell or impossible, virtually impossible. Buyers are not looking to buy a business and solve everybody’s problems.”

Expertise

For more than 30 years, Gary has bought, started, and sold businesses, from his family’s funeral homes to the winery he co-founded. He has bought a business from his parents, raised bank and investor money for a startup, and negotiated the sale of a venture that ran out of money. He coaches owners to plan a sale while the business is still growing and to step back from being its face. His advice is to “look at the end” when starting something and “deconstruct it from the back end.”

Industry

Gary works in business brokerage, where he prepares owners to sell their companies and connects buyers with sellers. He has more than 30 years of business transaction experience across funeral service, retail jewelry, national B2B trade media and events, and winemaking. At EH Media, headcount grew from under 10 to more than 100 employees during his time in sales leadership.

In their own words

Proudest accomplishment?
01
My experience with EH is probably one: starting literally a startup business and helping to grow it into 150 employees and a known worldwide brand within our B2B sector.
Best advice he’d give?
02
The biggest mistake that small business guys make is to do too many things at once. When you look at the most successful business people, they didn’t diversify; they just focused.
About Gary
03
My grandfather is sort of the patriarch of the family. He was the one who told me that everybody’s in sales. We’re not always closing, but we’re always selling.
